International Women’s Day. Press for progress
International Women’s Day was established on 8 th of March since the early 1900’s and it is a global day to celebrate and to remind us about all the women that were fighting for gender parity. It’s a day of global celebration of the achievements that women have realized in different area of life, such as the social, cultural, and political.
In some countries, 8th of March has lost its historical and political significance and it is only an opportunity for people to express their love and appreciation for women in their lives. But the United Nations and feminist NGO’s point out that this day should remind of the social and
economic hardships that women face throughout the day.
Every year different organizations assert a theme in order to raise awareness on current problems and subjects that need an action in order to be resolved as soon as possible. As the statistics of Economic World Forum Global Gender Report 1 tells us how the gender parity is over 200 years away, this year the established topic and its respectable campaign is #PressforProgress. Tere is a need of expanding the global movement of support, activism and advocacy.
2018’s International Women’s Day encourage the celebration, reflection and action, that need to be taken at national and international level. It is also a good occasion to build effective practices by implementing sustainable goals, and one of the most important goal is to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls from all over the world, as well as providing quality education to promote life learning process. We need to work to eliminate all forms of violence for all girls and women everywhere in the world.
One of the most harmful problems today is the exploitation of women on different levels, including the raise of number of trafficking and forced marriage, as well as female genital mutilation. In the past last years there was a current of significant changes in women’s emancipation process. Having more women in the boardroom, we might say that the essential rights have increased as well as women’s visibility as exceptional role models in different aspects of life. However, the facts show that women are still not paid equally, they are still are not present in equal number in business or politics… talking in general terms, the women are placed worse than men.
For these reasons, we should all join and continue the struggle women have been going through for centuries. We should celebrate 8th March, but also not forget that the fight for women’s rights has to happen each and every day, starting from our personal to our professional environments.
